FW18 Menswear; Major Moment | Moschino

“SEX AND SEXUALITY.”

This was the theme for the latest Moschino Menswear collection.

In a way, it was quite the departure for Jeremy Scott, the creative director of the label, in that he often does bright, light-hearted plays on pop-culture references – see his ‘Paper Dolls‘ and ‘My Little Pony‘ inspired collections.

And in another vein, it wasn’t too foreign, as the underpinning of Scott’s collections is social commentary in one way or another – as noted with the cardboard collection and the militaristic FW17 Menswear inspired by “Transformers.”

Of course, these days – in light of all the sex-posés and gender inequality revelations that are running rampant in Hollywood – it’s no surprise that Scott’s latest collection takes inspiration in the power of eroticism and sensuality surrounding society at the moment.

(What’s that? More politically charged fashion?)

Scott is known for his witty take on fashion, and this collection is no exception – but this time the quips were deeper and darker…

There was androgyny;

“in the end, aren’t we all joined?”

The designer mused that “people are in control of their sexuality and the way they want to look; you’re owning your own power.”

And so we saw fetishist pieces – lingerie-esque dresses, suspenders, chaps, corsets, thigh-high “fuck-me” boots, and gloves – that personified that commanding sexuality that Scott aimed to bring to his consumer.

And to further reinforce this, he added elements of kink – emphasized by the black latex and PVC; the black also synonymous with the presently ongoing #MeToo movement.

But when all was stripped away – no pun intended – Scott left us with a solidly cohesive collection that shows his versatility as a creative and his uncanny aptitude for connecting his designs with the current social climate.

See the rest of the collection here.

Enjoy!
