SS21; Major Moment | Moschino | LOOKBOOK

Moschino is fun! Moschino is whimsy!

And to be honest, the brand has always had a way of tapping into current goings-on and portraying them in a clever and witty way.

So it wasn’t a surprise when many people read maybe *too* deeply this season’s puppet show, questioning it was all a playful metaphor for the political puppetry taking place.

But Jeremy Scott asserts that this isn’t the case.

In fact, he mentions a collection rooted in couture.

He noted that there was something quite emotional about the process – the crafty handiwork, sentimentality, and connection to history.

As a result, for the Spring collection, Scott really wanted to return to artisanal qualities of tailoring and construction – and really place the emphasis on the production of the garments, rather than that of the entire presentation.

Then coronavirus happened.

As lockdowns across the world began happening, Scott wondered to himself, “What would be the best way for me to give the same experience that you’re used to, coming to see my shows live?… How could I give you that whimsy, that magic, that fantasy?”

So, heading back to his couture-centric research, Scott happened upon the Théâtre de la Mode, a touring exhibition of miniature couture creations that Parisian designers sent on the road after World War II to help raise funds to revive the French fashion industry.

What could be more apt at a time like this?

So Scott partnered with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the creator of the Muppets, to create marionettes of his favourite models – see if you can spot any familiar faces – to wear the 40 looks, which were first constructed in life-size versions and then scaled down to fit the puppets, which I’m sure was no easy feat!

And in an almost serendipitous moment – this method of working really pushed the clothes to the forefront; getting the details, fabrics and proportions just right.

That’s what I love about this collection.

Despite the fact that it may not be the most revolutionary of collections, the clothing is well made, and the entire production really emerged organically, with the pieces and marionettes, not only suiting the inspiration….but also the new normal – prioritising the craft of fashion, not getting lost in the frippery of ‘the show,’ and still creating a social media splash.

See the rest of the collection here.

Enjoy!
