FW17; Major Moment | Mary Katrantzou

For Fall 2017, Mary Katrantzou plunged into the world of Disney.

Seemingly unexpected, it makes sense when one thinks about it.

What better source of inspiration for a highly visual designer – known for her trompe l’oeil clothing – than Disney’s own ultra-illustrative 1940’s classic, Fantasia.

In fact, the Vogue reviewer describes the “spectacular oceans of moving color and pattern” as a natural habitat for Katrantzou who has been solidly established as a queen in pattern manipulation.

However, while the vividly colorful film inspired the color palette, the embellishments and the fun and whimsy of the collection, it was Fantasia’s time period that informed the silhouettes.

A good designer does her research. And it is clear that Katrantzou did hers!

Furs, fringe, and big shoulders, there was definitely a film noir vibe – a cinematic period marked by pessimism and cynicism, an ironic contrast to the animation and color of the clothing.

In fact, much like the film itself, this collection hits the right notes. Katrantzou has been consistent in delivering artistically inspired clothing that is both dramatic and wearable.

And, while one may note the perceived absence of that “signature” Katrantzou drama that is expected, this is overall a cohesively grounded and aesthetically pleasing collection and that to me is her signature.

See the rest of the collection here.

Enjoy!
