Fall 2021 Couture; Major Moment | Jean Paul Gaultier
It’s no secret that I haven’t felt the most inspired by fashion lately. The industry just feels like it’s just going through the motions, churning out looks – albeit glamorous, and pretty, but feeling overly commercialised without a real sense of meaning.
But, maybe it’s where society is at now…and fashion is, as fashion does, accurately reflecting that? But that’s a story for another day.
However, collaborations are still an exciting part of the industry; Jean Paul Gaultier deciding that this is the way forward.
After announcing his retirement in 2020, Gaultier is shaking things up by collaborating with other designers to produce his Couture collections.
First up is Sacai’s Chitose Abe.
About the partnership, Gaultier mentions that it felt more like an intimate, friendly proposal; described less like a meeting of two companies, and more a meeting of two individuals.
Abe, on the other hand, being a big fan of Gaultier, states that she didn’t even really have to consult the archives. “I didn’t want to take [it] too literally, but to make it Sacai and very, very up to date.”
So of course, there were many recognisable Gaultier pieces – modernised tartan pieces, reimagined pinstriped suits, and an updated (iconic) cone bra – all infused with a Japanese twist and street-style edge that the house has become known for.
And in true collaborative spirit, both Abe and Gaultier walked the runway together, closing the show in t-shirts embroidered “Enfants Terribles,” a phrase embodying not only the partnership but the rebellious nature of this collection.
See the rest of the collection here.
Enjoy!
