SS21; Major Moment | Erdem
What I love about London Fashion Week is that it really encapsulates the essence of such a vibrant city; from the edgy, rebellious spirit to the sensible but romantic vibe (and everything in between) that Londoners sometimes have.
This diversity is really championed here and probably gives rise to the creativity that is celebrated here.
Erdem Moralioglu often tends to the latter, and his Spring showing was no different.
This season, like many other creatives, Moralioglu found inspiration in lockdown.
Based on the novel “The Volcano Lover,” which sees 18th-century Emma Hamilton, engaged in a passionate affair despite being married to a Greecian vase-obsessed volcanologist – all set against the backdrop of the French Revolution and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
“There was something about this odd time that we’re living in, and the idea that there is something so much bigger than all of us that controls everything,” Moralioglu noted.
“It’s beauty in a time that’s very ugly, and the idea of creating something decadent with an underbelly of something poor.”
And what a relevant sentiment indeed.
Moralioglu crafted romantic, 18th century-esque dresses, some spliced with elements taken from the story – be it utilitarian cargo, or crinkly organza to give a sense of “poorness.”
And while, due to the pandemic, many designers have shifted their perception of dressing to one that is more pared down, the Erdem woman will still be dressing up no matter the state of the world.

Enjoy!
