Spring 2018 Couture; Major Moment | Maison Margiela
Hello lovelies,
Now, I don’t think I’ve reviewed any of the Maison Margiela collections before so, admittedly, I’m actually really, really excited about this one.
The label itself is quite interesting.
Founded by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, the brand is known to be quite deconstructive, splicing and taking apart traditional silhouettes, challenging our perspective of clothing.
Today, under the direction of John Galliano, the house retains its rebellious spirit and artisanal techniques.
But of course, Galliano – an iconoclast in his own right, has found ways to modernize the clothing as exhibited with this genius collection.
Taking inspiration from how life is viewed through our phone and camera lenses, Galliano and the Margiela team developed – that’s right, developed! – their own photo-sensitive fabric.
Audience members were asked to ensure their flash was on as the collection walked, and as photos were taken gasp-worthy fashion moments were created.
“freezing the glamor of the accidental, the magical moment…”
The human eye saw the collection one way, and the cameras recorded another (as seen in some of the images).
Of the process, Galliano claimed, “it’s quite scientific. We recorded every moment of what we were making, then looked at the photographs and altered what we were doing according to the photos.”
I mean, how purely brilliant!
It is not often that science and fashion collide – especially in couture which is somewhat rooted in tradition!
However, Galliano proves once again that he is socially in-tune, and is able to marry the current with the DNA of the house.
It really is quite remarkable to see a creative director step up and really push the boundaries of a house they’ve taken charge of.
Galliano has always been a rule-breaker, but for a house built on the unconventional, maybe it really is the perfect pairing?
See the rest of the collection here.
Enjoy!
xx
