Spring 2018 Couture; Major Moment |
Balmain; 44 François Premier
So it’s not quite a collection review, but it is something of noteworthy mention.
Mega-label Balmain, under the creative direction of Olivier Rousteing, has launched a couture-level, evening wear capsule collection – and during Couture Week of course!
Named after the physical address of the atelier, this Balmain first sees the elegance and sophistication that isn’t usually seen on the Balmain runway.
Now that’s not to say the collections aren’t chic and polished, but demure and dignified aren’t necessarily the first words that come to mind when describing Rousteing’s usually powerful Balmain-army.
“I’ve gone from a dress of armor to a dress of glamour…”
Part Hollywood-glamor, part cool Parisian girl, Rousteing claims that he wanted to evoke the spirit of Pierre Balmain, the house’s founder, and the ever-recognizable, punk rock vibe established by Christophe Decarnin, the creative director from 2006-2011.
What is interesting to note is that, while most houses have archives on which to rely on, Balmain has not historically done red carpet gowns.
And so Rousteing had to rely on the house-codes and the long-standing atelier workers – some of whom have been working there for upwards of 20 years.
Of course, the results are beautifully rendered, which is no surprise from a house with such expert command of couture techniques.
These are full, to-the-floor gowns that have reimagined classic French style, and updated it for the modern woman. Sequins, marabou feathers, and impeccable tailoring all add to the high-end glamor of the collection…
…and would leave any woman desiring sharp, evening luxe completely satisfied.
