SS18; Major Moment | Louis Vuitton

anachronism
[
əˈnakrəˌnɪz(ə)m/]
noun
noun: anachronism; plural noun: anachronisms

  1. a thing belonging or appropriate to a period other than that in which it exists, especially a thing that is conspicuously old-fashioned.
“the town is a throwback to medieval times, an anachronism that has survived the passing years”
  2. the action of attributing something to a period to which it does not belong.

This idea of a merging of time was the basis for Nicholas Ghesquière’s Louis Vuitton SS18 collection.

And, home to over 38,000 artifacts from throughout history, what better place to showcase this merging of times than in the Louvre?

Paris – and by extension France – and by extension Europe – is rich in history.

In fact, many of the French houses often draw upon these known and recognizable tropes and play on them, updating them for the modern consumer.

Ghesquière is no different – nor is he a stranger to this!

And, while a collection from his stint at Balenciaga over a decade ago married Louis XVI frippery and rock tour t-shirts, this season Ghesquière focused a little more on Louis’ famous consort, Marie.

But this was a sportier Marie.

Models wore silk running shorts and LV sneakers as they stomped down the runway held in the lower pavilion of the museum.

These were paired with flowy tops, brocade jackets, and a Stranger Things t-shirt??

Strappy harnesses over wispy chiffon dresses, and sparkly cocktail frocks reminiscent of a romantic French time, but still youthful enough for today’s woman.

But that was Ghesquière’s intention.

To create such a juxtaposition of time periods that the onlookers were forced to reflect on how one’s perception of clothing [vs costuming], especially those of times past.

He asked, “how today can we incorporate pieces considered as ‘costume’ into an everyday wardrobe?”

And if we view fashion as dressing up to play whatever part in life that we have ascribed to then this shouldn’t be any difficult feat.

Shakespeare famously noted “all the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players,”…

…so why not have fun playing dress up?

Enjoy!
