SS18; Notable Mention | Prada
Fashion’s response to the political climate has always been interesting.
And now, in these ever tumultuous times, the reaction has ranged from being super military charged and combative, to one of optimism, intended to inspire and encourage.
Miuccia Prada, for her Spring-Summer 2018 collection, has found a way to seemingly balance the two.
To be honest, I wasn’t going to write a review for this collection.
It was pretty and pretty noteworthy, but the more I stared at it and it’s intricacies, I felt it necessary to be elaborated on.
Prada has always done very artisanal collections.
Color and graphic elements often abound, done in sophisticated ways – expected of such a lofty house.
This season was no different.
The root of the collection – surprisingly – was comic book art; pop art, manga and the likes.
Who would have guessed that good old Miuccia would be a fan of cartoons?!
But although the inspiration may seem light, the message was still substantial.
It was one of resistance.
Prada reasoned, “Cartoons can tackle tough subjects in a light way, [so] you can suggest so much more than if you are serious.”
And so, she sent a slew of tough, militaristic models down the runway, all while highlighting the works of several women artists — cartoonists — throughout history.
Of course, the polish was still there; the tailoring and boyish prep associated with the brand, albeit offered in a more ponderous, moody way.
Feminism, politics, and art.
What more could one want to make a statement in 2018?
See the rest of the collection here.
Enjoy!
