SS18; Major Moment | Brandon Maxwell
Happy hump day all!
The New York Fashion Week recaps continue, and another Major Moment to be had…
… this time in the form of Brandon Maxwell’s Spring-Summer ’18 collection.
Maxwell, a relative newcomer to Fashion Week – having debuted his ready-to-wear line in 2015 – has also enjoyed many successes as not only a stylist, but also as a fashion photographer.
In fact, it was his styling work under Nicola Formichetti that led him to the role of Lady Gaga’s fashion director in 2012, even designing for and dressing her in that now-iconic, white pantsuit for the 2016 Oscars.
With deep roots in New York and a brand mission to make women feel, “beautiful, sophisticated and powerful,” it’s no surprise that Mother Monster herself serves as a muse for the label.
If the goal was “luxe-but-clean” glam and formal tailoring, Maxwell was definitely successful.
And while a lot of his codes seem predictable and relatively safe, this season the designer really upped the ante and challenged his own aesthetic.
Firstly to be noted is a use of color; previous seasons have seen Maxwell’s palette more muted.
What changed?
Maxwell is happy.
“My life has become more colorful…” and naturally, so have his designs.
Backstage, the designer himself admitted to being happy for the first time in his adult life: –
He is recently engaged, and has made a conscious decision to mentally remove the industry pressures of being the best;
“Maybe I am never going to be that ‘big thing,’ but I can be that big thing to myself,” Maxwell said.
Added to this vivid and polychromatic collection, Maxwell integrated more daywear looks – in the form of crisp shirts, denim, sweaters, and even flirty day dresses.
Something for every woman no?
But of course, the biggest addition was the line’s expansion to include an accessory line: the creation of a staple bag [a timeless and fashionable play on a surgeon’s bag] and those whimsical animal costume earrings made in collaboration with a jewelry line called Lunch at the Ritz by Zander Elliot.
See the beauty that a clear-head and change in perspective can create?
[….obviously referring to those finale gowns😉….]

Enjoy!
