FW17; Major Moment | Balmain

Balmain has always been about inclusivity.

And for Olivier Rousteing, who has made it his priority to showcase diversity within the brand – both in terms of ethnicity and age, this season is no different.

Rousteing’s starting point was the 90’s grunge movement.

Think Gods of Rock. Kind of rock ’n’ roll. Kind of glam.

…elevated ripped jeans and t-shirt kind of vibe [much like what the creative director himself wears.]

The “glam rock” inspiration was evident throughout the collection – manifesting itself in glittering golds and silvers, and wolf and eagle motifs.

But the intended feeling ran deeper than this.

For Rousteing, the movement was also about androgyny and blurring the gender lines – something a lot of these rockers were known for [à la Kurt Cobain, Iggy Pop, David Bowie].

A smart move for the brand to take advantage of the current trend of mixed-gender runways, and also to create cohesion between the mens and women lines.

It’s quintessential Balmain.

Maybe a little more relaxed than what we’re used to, but trust that the level of glitzy embellishment is still there.

That said, I know that this generation’s Balmain may not be to everyone’s taste, but none can deny that Rousteing churns out some strong collections.

See the rest of the collection here.

Enjoy!
