*FW17; Major Moment | Calvin Klein
So, of course you knew this had to be a Major Moment!
After months of teasing and anticipation – the debut of Raf Simons, ex-creative director of Dior, in his newly assumed position at the head the Calvin Klein creative team.
Simons, has a vastly diverse – and successful – background, with over 20 years in fashion and experience in both mens and womenswear and despite not being American himself, has been lauded as a savior of American fashion.
Thus, the move to ultra-Americana Calvin Klein doesn’t seem so out of character.
The house’s codes include minimalism and sensuality, two things Simons has mastered (although he rejects the term minimal).
So, naturally Simons played to his strengths.
Inspiration came from existing American tropes – band uniforms, businessman suits, the Wild West – matched with Simons’ own art influences.
The result? A large, solid debut collection with lots of opportunities for the team to branch out from.
Raf’s appointment to the CK family has been rife with mystery, but it seems that he can do no wrong. With the introduction of a couture-ish line – Calvin Klein by Appointment – it is evident that Simons’ is intent on flexing his muscles and applying all that he has learned to the brand.
And what better place to begin to re-navigate the American waters, than with a quintessential American brand.
See the rest of the collection here.
Enjoy!
