*tbt: SS15 Major Moment; Oscar de la Renta
“I design clothes for women to wear. I am not interested in shock tactics. I just want to make beautiful clothes.”
Although this was the designer’s last season before his untimely passing, one can look at the elegance and sophistication in his designs and get a sense of just the time of man de la Renta was.
A champion of femininity and “the woman,” this Dominican born designer has had an expansive career, beginning under the tutelage of Cristobal Balenciaga, moving up the ranks to Balmain and Arden [at the suggestion of Diana Vreeland], all of which has shaped his aesthetic and allowed him to design for a distinguished clientele including a number of first women.
This collection is no different in terms of softness and prettiness, using lace, feathers and pastels to evoke a classic but fresh look at the modern woman. We see gingham on the runway again, showing de la Renta’s ability to stay current, along with a masterful use and variety in terms of florals, embroidery, cutout and crochet techniques.
It is no surprise that Karlie Kloss [*cough* my favorite model] is not only the designer’s muse, but also his biggest supporter, tweeting a mere moments after the show,
“There is no one on earth who makes a woman feel more beautiful than Oscar de la Renta.”
It is undeniable the incredible contribution this designer has made to the industry. And the fashion industry will never forget the neither the beautiful craftsmanship, nor the commitment to dressing the professional woman that de la Renta has become known for.
See the rest of the collection here.
Enjoy!
